During my third year of university, I saw many friends and classmates get fired from school.

If you do not maintain a certain average grade, the school decides not to want you as a student anymore.

Xprexity University is a tough school, but I do not think that’s the problem. These students were smart, otherwise they would not have been accepted initially.

In hindsight, I think the problem is that the students were not prepared to handle an environment of unlimited abundance. There were distractions everywhere and they could not stop indulging in them.

Rethink what life was like during your first eighteen years. For most of us, our parents told us what to do and we had to obey.

You are not allowed to go out with someone.
You can not wear makeup.
You have to go to school every day.
You can not play video games on a weekday.
You must be at home at a certain time every Saturday.

Life was simple because you were a soldier obeying their orders.

And then you enter the University – this is your first exposure to freedom.

What happens once at the university?

You do not want to go to class? So skip it. You will not be in trouble.
You can party and drink every night if you wish.
Want to stay and play video games all day? Nobody stops you.
Do you have a girlfriend? You can spend all day with her if you want.
Some people could not handle this level of abundance – their grades suffered, and they were no longer students.

Those who have survived are those who have maintained some discipline.

It’s easy to blame the students and their lack of will, but some of them were just not prepared for this environment.

What if I told you that we all have the same problem right now?

We live in a time when we have unlimited choices and we are all slowly losing control.

Some of the world’s largest companies have an attention-focused business model: the more time users spend on their products, the more money they make.

My assumption is simple: technology has made it easier than ever for companies to make you dependent on their products. It’s more important than ever to understand how they do it and change your own behavior so you can live more intentionally. The more you master your use of modern products, the more successful you will be.

I do not feel too dramatic.

In the 1940s and 1950s, doctors recommended people to smoke cigarettes.

Think about it.

For many decades, people were smoking cigarettes without realizing how dangerous they were.

I wonder … what behaviors do we do today that are considered quite normal, but we do not realize how dangerous they really are? How long-term research can there be if some of these technologies have just come out?

We are more and more connected. You can jump on a FaceTime call with someone whenever you want. But the more connected we are, the less connected we are to ourselves.

We are all addicted to stimulation. When the whole world constantly shouts out thoughts, you lose the ability to understand your own mind.

I am not writing this post as an enlightened monk who understood everything – all I know is the result of a fuck and experimentation.

In high school, I was addicted to EverQuest.
When Prosper202 was released for the first time, I could not help but refresh my stats every 5 minutes.
When I moved to Bangkok in 2013, I spent a lot of time dating.
I think I’m the most disciplined I’ve ever been, but I could probably spend much less time browsing YouTube and Reddit.

I’m going to share with you a few areas to watch for, as well as some of the strategies I’ve used myself to encourage my own behaviors.

The Dark Sides of Modern Technology

I will not deny the positive impacts of technology on our lives. I have no interest in going back to a time when Amazon’s 2-day delivery was no longer a thing.

Shareholders are pushing public companies to increase their revenues. And some of them are ready to play dirty.

Remember how simple video games were in our childhood? You buy a game, you beat it and you’re done.

But now, gaming companies are experimenting with different ways to become more dependent on their products.

Overwatch is one of my favorite video games.

The object system was so simple in games. You want an article? Well, you have to collect coins, save them, and then you “buy” the item. Completed.

Now, many games offer chests. It’s a treasure chest that gives you four random prizes.

You want an article in particular? You will have to continue grinding these loot boxes and rely on luck to get the custom skin you want.

Does not it really look like slot machines?

Well, that’s pretty much according to Senator Josh Hawley. At present, there is legislation on loot boxes, as it exposes children to the mechanisms of gambling.

I’m sure you’ve heard of food addiction. It is easy to look at a fat person and feel that they have no discipline or self-control.

Well … companies are using technology to make you more dependent on food.

We are biologically predisposed to appreciate fats and sugars.

Food companies design their products to contain much more sugar and fat than can occur naturally.

In my experiences with Keto, I was surprised to see how many products contained needlessly high fructose corn syrup and other forms of sugar.

Here are other ways technology has changed products to make them more dependent:

Entertainment. We are in the war continuously now. It’s an arms race between HBO, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Disney and other companies to create as much original content as possible so we can pay them $ 20 a month.

Damn, look at all these shows that I can watch. But then, I look at the backlog of shows I want to watch.

I think it would take me eight hours a day, for six consecutive months, if I ever had to fill in my backlog, and that does not take into account all the new programs that continue to come out.
We no longer need to drive to blockbuster: all the movies or shows you want are on your phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Want to watch something on YouTube? Their recommended videos, their algorithms, and the automatic playback of the next video mean that you will spend more time than expected.
Porn. I remember when, with my friends, we found a porn magazine in the woods at the age of ten.
It was our “Holy Grail”. Wow, so that’s what the women look like under their shirts.
How is porn these days? Foolish.
You can watch porn whenever you want. The average guy is probably bored of “normal” porn and starts looking at some weird stuff.
The problem is that it creates unrealistic expectations of sexuality and intimacy.

Social media. I wrote about my experience of leaving Facebook several years ago. Excessive use of social media has been linked to depression.
Dating and sex. I did not use Tinder since the app exploded after starting a romantic relationship. However, I watched my friend use Tinder once.
I started to search him and I felt the nuclear dopamine rush.
At the time, we had to approach women. It was to do or die. Now, it’s just a thumb exercise.
Video games. Video games do not end, companies update them and fix them all the time. A few years ago, I was addicted to Clash Royale for two weeks.
I had to stop because it was on my phone – it means I have access whenever I want.
Food. I wrote earlier about how companies design their foods to be overloaded with fats and sugars. That’s why I started cooking more and more. I control what I put in it.

Shopping and consumption. You do not need to clothe yourself and go to the mall to ship. One-click purchase and 2-day shipping eliminated friction.
Gambling. This scares me because I personally know a lot of guys who lost everything because of the game. I knew a guy who liked going to Casinos.
He had “frictions” for him to go to the casino because he had to go to Las Vegas or Biloxi for treatment. Well, he downloaded a casino program that allowed him to play anytime. You can guess how is the end
The list is lengthened increasingly. Smartphones, ubiquitous notifications, verification of your company’s statistics, etc.
Now, none of these are horrible in themselves.

I played Tekken 7 yesterday on my PS4 and watched Netflix. I checked Snapchat. I do not pretend to be an enlightened monk.

I know what you think – everything is ok in moderation. This is true in theory, but most of us do not moderate our use.

And that’s not entirely our fault, because each year, these companies continue to innovate to make you addicted.

We all complain about being exhausted. We all complain that there is not enough time in the day.

This is one of the main reasons why our behavior is not as intentional as we think.

Let’s talk about how to regain control.

Overcoming Addictions and Gaining Control of Your Life

First of all, I am not a clinical psychologist.

There are levels of habits and addictions, and sometimes a blog post is not what you need at the moment. If you are really addicted to something, ask a professional for help.

Here are some elements that I implemented in my life.

  1. 1. Develop your self-awareness and do not bullshit yourself
    Ask anyone how long they spend on Facebook. Their answer will be “Oh, I just check once a day.”

    Facebook has announced that the average person spends 50 minutes a day on Facebook.

    It’s JUST Facebook.

    How much time do we lose when we add Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Youtube, Snapchat and more?

    The first step towards improvement is to understand your own behaviors and not get confused about them.

    I like to follow the data whenever I can.

    For iPhone, I like to use the ScreenTime function. It will tell you how much time you spend on your phone.
    You can use RescueTime to see how you navigate the Web while you work.
    I shared my personal KPI dashboard. If you are trying to stop drinking soda, note how much you drink each day.
    Most people do not want to follow their data.

    At university, I hated logging into my bank account.

    It’s because I did not want to know the truth. If I had overdraft fees, I did not want to see them and ruin my day. I preferred to bury my head in the sand.

    But to face my fears is what allowed me to improve myself.

    Learn to be nice to yourself.

    When Screentime came out for the first time, I was horrified to see that I was spending 3 hours a day on my iPhone. I began to reprimand myself and judge myself, but then realized that it did not help.

    This is my language instead.

    “Ok, you spend 3 hours a day on your phone. No problem, this is the starting point. The goal is to use the phone an hour a day. Let’s see what applications you use daily and what type of fat we can reduce. ”

    Awareness is the first step towards progress.

  2. 2. My most important weapon is the structure.
    I was trying to lose weight several years ago, and it was so difficult to get rid of junk food. I had to use a lot of willpower.

    I learned a technique that involves adding instead of subtracting.

    Instead of reducing junk food, I turned to a healthier diet. By focusing on eating healthier foods, there just was not so much room for junk food.

    You can start by figuring out what the ideal day would look like, then reverse engineer.

    I call this structure. You are intentional about how you spend your time.

    I agree to watch Netflix one hour a day. So I schedule it at 6 pm on days when I do not run in Jiu Jitsu class.

    Every day is coherent. I wake up at a certain time. I eat at the same hours. I work at the same hours.

    The more consistent my days are, the more positive habits are rooted.

  3. 3. Take any medicine
    My friend smokes a lot of grass.

    I remember he once said to me, “I’m going to use drugs anyway. It’s better for me to be hooked on weed than on heroin or something worse. ”

    He thought it was a joke, but it’s a concept I applied to my life.

    I will always play video games. It satisfies something in me. I love to level up, be competitive and learn to improve my skills.

    But there are some video games that I consider crack or cocaine. I can not handle a MOBA like DOTA 2 or League of Legends. They are too addictive for me, so I swore never to touch them for the rest of my life.

    So, I play solo games. I can play for 30 minutes, get my solution and move on.

    I am not interested in having an Instagram account.

    I do not want to respond to random comments, worry about the number of “likes” or “followers”, or get an idea of ​​the perfect version of my life.

    So, my least medicine is Snapchat. I am nobody there. There are no tastes or comments. It’s not an addiction for me, but I get many benefits.

    One of my friends quit smoking by going to Vaping. The triggers are the reward are the same, but the routine is less dangerous.

    If you engage in behavior, try to move to something less dangerous.

  4. 4. Change your environment
    I ate a ton in New York.

    I could not help it, there were restaurants everywhere. I could not go to the gym without going past five pizzerias.

    Now that I live in Atlanta, I barely eat at the restaurant. I live in the suburbs and I have to drive if I want to go to a good restaurant.

    It’s not like my will was different, I’m just in a different environment.

    How can you change your environment to encourage or discourage different behaviors?

    Do you play too much on your PS4? How can you add a little FRICTION to make it more difficult to play whenever you want?

    If your wife goes to work, give her your PS4 controllers to put in her purse. In this way, you will only play at night.
    Once you have finished playing, unplug the power cord and put it in the attic. The next time you want a “quick game”, you have to go to the attic.
    People also count as environment

    Do you surround yourself with people who lead a life you want to emulate? Because otherwise, they will drag you down.

  5. 5. What is the root cause?
    Whenever you solve a problem, it is important to separate the symptom from the root cause.

    Say you need to write a book. You decide that laptops are full of distractions and you switch to a 1990-style word processor that can not connect to the Internet.

    Will it change everything? Probably not. You will probably find other ways to distract yourself. You will look out the window or read a book on your shelf.

    There is something interior and deep here. What I have noticed in my own life is that I am more inclined to adopt addictive and distracting behavior when I am stressed.

    A few years ago, I was the victim of a drought campaign that lasted two months and I felt that nothing worked. My best offers have dropped. Nothing was hitting and it started to affect me mentally.

    How did I deal with this? I really started using Starcraft 2. I felt good about playing the game for 8 hours and seeing myself progress. There was an instant return. There was a positive affirmation that put me to work = results.

    Video games and Netflix have become a form of escape for a few weeks. I did not have to deal with the uncomfortable feelings I had.

    I had fun, but I was not satisfied.

    I had to get by. Is that why I’m on Earth? Have fun all day? No.

    I uninstalled my games and canceled my entertainment subscriptions. I made a pact with myself by focusing on my campaigns until they reached their target. It only took a few days of hard work to get back into the dark.

    Sometimes we are prone to addictive behaviors to cope with pain, stress, or to avoid feelings of unease. This is only a temporary mask.

    The only way to treat your pain is to confront it directly.

The Struggles of Man

Why should you make fun of what I just wrote?

Because the world will no longer reward the average.

Automation and artificial intelligence will remove jobs. Not in the future – NOW.

The average workers are being replaced by Asian people who can do a better job, at $ 7 an hour, with no benefits.

When I think of the “average” person, I think of the person who can not control his vices. Spending 3 hours a day on Facebook is considered normal. Spending the weekend watching in haste Office / Game of Thrones is considered normal.

The world is becoming more and more competitive and you have to bring your best game. A total and careful control of your own behavior is a superpower.

And finally, happiness does not come from doing easy things. You do not achieve anything by doing what everyone else does.

True happiness comes when you challenge yourself and crush your own limits imposed by yourself.

When you are on your death bed, will you regret not surfing more on Instagram? Will you look back and wish to improve your video game character?

Probably not.

Inside each of us lies the potential for greatness. I do not care if you’re already great – there’s always another level.

Some of the smartest people in the fucking world are trying to find a way to turn you into an insane zombie. Do you spend 50 minutes a day on Facebook? They are trying to find a way to make you spend 2 hours a day scrolling.

To conquer the world, you must first conquer yourself.
